This section of our site has been designed to assist current members and people who are not members but are thinking of joining the scheme.

How do I know if I'm a member ?

If you’re a current member of the scheme you will see pension contributions being deducted from your salary. If you're not sure check your payslip.

Who can become members of the scheme ?

Anyone under the age of 65 who is employed by an employer who participates in the Local Government Pension Scheme can join (for a list of employers in our scheme click here). There are, however, a few exceptions:

  • Teachers, Police Officers and Fire-fighters, have their own schemes and are not allowed to join our scheme.

  • An employee who has opted out of our scheme more than once may not be allowed to re-join the scheme.

The ability of some LGPS members to remain in the scheme has also been extended to include those transferring to an NHS employing authority, where their NHS employer enters into an admission agreement.

How do I become a member of the scheme ?

All full time employees have automatic membership and should be brought into the scheme when they commence employment.

If, however, you are employed part time, casual or you have not been brought into the scheme all you have to do is complete an Opt In form (.pdf format 221Kb) and return it to your payroll section who will start deducting pension contributions from your pay.
